By Car
- From Inverness follow the signs to Ullapool (A835), take the 2nd exit on the roundabout at Maryburgh towards Ullapool (A835)
- On the hill down towards Contin there is a left turn signposted for Marybank (not to be confused with Maryburgh), take this left turn over the weight restricted (7.5t) Moy bridge over the River Conon.
- After 1/4 mile at the top of the hill at the sharp corner, turn right, signposted for Strathconon (Scatwell & Scardroy).
- Continue along this single track road for 5 miles or so, on rounding a fairly tight left hand bend at Scatwell you will see an old red phone box. 1 mile to go.
- On the way down the hill after the signed blind summit you will see a road to the left with a row of small post boxes, turn up here.
- Drive carefully but positively up the hill and turn left up to Rathad an Drobhair. The hill is a bit steep and needs a lower gear - if you come to a stop on the steep section please reverse back and start again on the less steep tarmac part as a standing start will wheelspin and destroy the road surface immediately.
When driving on single track roads always assume there is something coming around that next corner and hug the left side of the corner so if something does come you are already in the best position. Also remember that you need to leave enough slowing / stopping distance for yourself AND the other car. Dipped headlights are very useful for being seen further down the road.
By Train
From further south one of the best ways to travel is by train on the overnight sleeper, make sure you book early though as the full price tickets are not cheap - tickets available 3 months in advance from Fridays. Once in Inverness, if you wish to get as close as possible by train, continue on to Dingwall from where you will be able to get a taxi. If you are determined to get (nearly) all the way by train continue up the Kyle of Lochalsh line to Achanalt (you will have to request the stop here), from there it is possible to walk across the hills to Dalnacroich and on to Curin - much of it is bikeable but I will have to confirm the section between the train station and the track.
Closest shops and fuel:
Contin stores has a basic selection of necessities (inc. a computer shop!). The fuel station has a small shop too. Strathpeffer is a Victorian spa town and has shops with many catering for the tourist. Dingwall has a leisure centre, good selection of shops and is home to Lidl and a big 24hr Tesco!
